FIELD NOTE / 01 — BECOMING / SAHIL TAYAL

Identity is a verb, not a certificate

An identity can help you find your bearings. It can also make you afraid to move. The difference often depends on whether you regard the label as a description of what you have done or a rule about what you are allowed to do next.

AN ORIGINAL SAHILVERSE.FIELD NOTEOCTOBER 2026

We use labels because an entirely open life would be exhausting. “I am a writer,” “I am practical,” “I am bad at mathematics,” “I am the sort of person who finishes things.” Each sentence compresses years of experience into something you can carry in a pocket. That compression is useful. It helps us choose, explain ourselves and become legible to other people.

Trouble begins when a description turns into a border. If I once struggled with a skill, it does not follow that the skill and I have signed an eternal agreement. If I once succeeded at something, it does not follow that I must keep repeating it to remain recognisable. The stories we tell about ourselves are maps. A map that refuses revision eventually becomes a poor guide.

This does not mean reinventing yourself every Tuesday or treating every passing mood as a revelation. Continuity matters. Commitments matter. Other people reasonably expect some stability from us. But stability and revision are not enemies. The sturdier identity may be the one that can absorb new evidence without collapsing into embarrassment.

✳

Consider the phrase “I am not technical.” It may describe what you have practised so far. It does not establish what you could learn with a better explanation, a patient teacher, a usable tool or a hundred unglamorous repetitions. “I have not learned this yet” is not always true either—some constraints are real—but it keeps the question open long enough to test.

Perhaps the more useful question is not “Who am I really?” but “What patterns am I willing to keep, and which ones have earned a second look?” A self is partly remembered, partly chosen and partly negotiated with circumstance. No single afternoon settles the matter.

The freedom to revise is not a promise of unlimited reinvention. It is the smaller, sturdier permission to update your description when life presents better evidence.
