FIELD NOTE / 04 — CONNECTION / SAHIL TAYAL

Reciprocity is not telepathy

People matter enormously to us. That does not grant us access to the inside of their minds. A good relationship often begins with remembering the difference.

AN ORIGINAL SAHILVERSE.FIELD NOTEOCTOBER 2026

When someone answers late, changes plans or appears distant, a story quickly arrives to explain it. Perhaps they are angry. Perhaps they are overwhelmed. Perhaps the interaction meant something entirely different to them. The facts are usually smaller than the interpretation: a message went unanswered; a plan changed; a conversation ended early.

We cannot avoid interpretation. Social life would be impossible without inference. What we can do is hold an inference with the right amount of confidence. “I noticed this” is different from “I know what you meant.” The first makes conversation possible. The second can turn a guess into an accusation.

Reciprocity also asks something of our behaviour. It is not a ledger in which every gesture must receive immediate repayment. Relationships breathe unevenly; circumstances differ. But over time, sustained connection generally needs some evidence that both people want to participate. Warm words matter, and so do patterns of freely chosen action.

✳

Consent has an equally ordinary side. It is the capacity to say yes or no without punishment, and to recognise that another person’s answer belongs to them. A boundary does not require a prosecution brief. The right to decline is part of what makes an invitation meaningful.

Emotional literacy helps because it gives us more precise language for our own experience. Instead of treating a feeling as proof of an external fact, we can describe what happened, what we felt and what we need to clarify. This does not turn every conversation into a therapy session. It merely makes confusion less likely to masquerade as certainty.

There is dignity in leaving room for another human being to surprise you. A good relationship is not built by finally learning to read minds. It is built by asking, listening, observing what is reciprocated and respecting what remains unknown.
